Before Standard Chartered
I graduated from Tongji University in China and majored in Business Administration. Since 2004 I have been taking a part-time two-year MBA program from Cass Business School in the City of London.
Why Standard Chartered?
I could see there were international movement opportunities within the Bank. This, and the fact that the Bank has a long-standing international induction program with sophisticated product training directed me to the Bank. The International Induction Programme enabled me to meet senior management and other Graduate Associates.
Customer focus
A customer focused attitude helps me in my role. One of the largest steel manufacturers in China called me in early 2003 and asked whether the Bank could assist its American trading subsidiary to facilitate its trading business. Since I maintain regular contacts with the company and also have a relationship with its Hong Kong subsidiary, I was in a unique position to gain senior management support for a USD15M trade finance line. Through close coordination with Standard Chartered America and Hong Kong, I put the line in place within one week which enabled the company to finish a USD10M urgent transaction on time.
Responsive and trustworthy
Standard Chartered’s responsiveness is one of its ways of winning business. It’s about speed, coupled with success and these two things build trust with customers, creating really strong long-term relationships. I always believe that being responsive and trustworthy is one of the most important qualities both dealing with my colleagues in the Bank and in dealing with customers.
And my future?
During my time here I have continued to learn and advance my career in a cross-cultural environment, meeting new people and working towards the common goal of the Bank. In this way, I can make a real difference. The movement from China to UK has been a big milestone for me and I have learnt a lot. I will continue to involve myself in activities outside my daily role such as presentations and MBA studies and hope at some point in the future to return to China to take a senior role
