Before Standard Chartered
I graduated in 1994 from the National University of Singapore, with BA (merit) in Economics and Philosophy.
Why Standard Chartered?
Standard Chartered is an international bank and household name in Singapore. Hence when I was offered a job along with offers from local banks, the choice was obvious as I felt that the prospects were much brighter in Standard Chartered. It’s over 10 years now and I haven’t looked back!!
A joint project
After just 5 months at the Bank, my entire batch of Graduate Associates were seconded to Group Operations on a project to implement core market systems into Thailand, Indonesia and India. I had the opportunity to work overseas for the first time and spent 6 months in Hong Kong planning and preparing for the project, 6 months in Thailand and 8 months in Indonesia, training the people and implementing the systems.
It was a great opportunity to learn the basics of banking in operations and a great networking experience!!
The most challenging part
I have found managing changes across the organisation most challenging, especially given multiple stakeholders. I have learnt that a difference can be made if we remain resilient at all times and also actively engage and communicate with stakeholders. One such project in which I played a key role, was the establishment of two ‘Shared Services Centres’ in Chennai and Kuala Lumpur – these two centres now provide services to the Bank worldwide. I was part of the pioneering team that kicked off this strategic initiative, seeing it through from initial concept, to design, business case preparation, resource mobilisation, obtaining regulatory approval and implementation.
Huge potential
Standard Chartered has kept my interest for over ten years for many reasons. The Bank has done well over the years but still has huge potential, which excites me. It has a diversity of people and geographies that is very appealing and its culture is very human.
And my future?
I aspire to a senior role in general management.
